Arizona Coyotes defenseman and top trade target, Jakob Chychrun is on the move to the Ottawa Senators Wednesday eve. For the young blueliner Arizona is receiving a conditional first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, a conditional second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft and a second-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Chychrun has two years remaining on the six-year contract he signed with the Coyotes back in 2018.

Despite a late start to the season due to a wrist injury, the 24-year-old defenseman has 28 points (seven goals, 21 assists) in 36 games so far. Chychrun sat out the past eight games because of trade-related reasons. The Florida native was selected by Arizona in the first round (No. 16) of the 2016 NHL Draft, Chychrun has 170 points (60 goals, 110 assists) in 373 regular-season games and one goal in nine Stanley Cup Playoff games. The 2023 first-round pick is top-five protected and will become an unprotected pick in 2024 if it is top five. If the Senators reach the 2023 Eastern Conference Final, the second-round pick becomes a 2024 first-round pick that is top-10 protected. If it does fall in the top ten, then it becomes an unprotected first round in 2025.

Overall, this seems like a good deal for both teams prioritising future production. The Senators get a young and talented offensive defenseman, who's under contract for two more years at a reasonable 4.6 million cap hit. While Arizona gets a handful of picks to add to its increasingly stuffed draft cupboard; Arizona now has six picks in the first three rounds of the upcoming draft and eight for next years. I really think both teams are likely to be happy with the results of this deal, Chychrun is certainly bound to be happy as he requested a trade from the Coyotes over a year ago.
