It didn’t take long for the top pick in the 2018 NFL draft to find a new team as the Los Angeles Rams claimed Baker Mayfield off waivers on Tuesday.
The move comes just one day after the Carolina Panthers released the 27-year-old QB, who captured the Heisman Trophy in 2017 with the Oklahoma Sooners.
Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks said that Mayfield had requested the release in what he called a mutual decision as the Rams will inherit his $1.35 million contract.
The Austin-born pivot is reportedly being sent the team’s playbook so that he can study their offense on his way to SoFi Stadium and potentially start for them this week.
The Super Bowl champs prepare to face the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday Night Football with their playoff hopes potentially hanging in the balance.
LA has lost six in a row, winning just three games all season and last Saturday, they placed starting quarterback Matthew Stafford on injured reserve because of a spinal cord contusion.
Rams head coach Sean McVay says there’s a good chance Stafford might not play again this season even though he’s eligible to return by Week 17, leaving the door open for Mayfield to try and rejuvenate his career.
Since being traded to Carolina from the Cleveland Browns over the previous offseason, Mayfield has had a brutal 2022 campaign, completing less than 60% of his passes in six starts, going 1-5 over that stretch, while he also tossed six picks.
The Rams are in danger of becoming the first defending champion to miss the playoff a year after winning it all since the Denver Broncos in 2016.
