UFC 318: Paulo Costa (14-4) vs Roman Kopylov (14-3)

Roman Kopylov to win R3 or DEC (-110)
Paulo Costa (14-4) is a flash from the past that needs to retire. He’s lost four of his last five fights, and his only win in that span was a decision victory against a 40-year-old Luke Rockhold. There is no denying his phyiscal prowess and athletic ability and he had a lot of success earlier in his career, knocking out opponents with his tenacity and athletism. However, he has changed his style drastically and has been out-struck in all four of his losses. Our model likes that to be the case again on Saturday in The Big Easy. Roman Kopylov (14-3) is a talented kickboxer who will carry a reach advantage into this bout. He lands nearly fivee signifagant strikes per minute and has the cardio to keep that pace up for a gruling 15 minutes. The Russian is the betting favourite for good reason, though we can move his -250 down to a -110 by taking him to finish this fight in the third round, or pick Costa apart en route to a decision. Kopylov has won six of his last seven fights, and his only loss over that time came via submission, which is not Costa’s game. Furthermore, Kopylov has worked on his grappling, securing five takedowns in his last appearance against a powerful striker, Chris Curtis. Curtis and Costa are both stalking boxers who load up their shots. If the Novosibirsk product can instill a similar game plan, utlizing his hand speed and timley takedowns there is no reason to think that he won’t dominate Saturday Night.
