USC quarterback Caleb Williams has been named the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner, becoming the first Trojan to win college football's most prestigious award in over 15 years.
Williams was one of four finalists for this year's trophy, beating out TCU's Max Duggan, C.J. Stroud of Ohio State and Georgia's Stetson Bennett.
The Trojans' star pivot threw 37 touchdown passes this season against only four interceptions while also running for 10 scores.
In 2022 he completed two-thirds of his throws, averaging 9.1 yards per attempt in his first season at USC.
Williams is a transfer from Southern Cal who was convinced to move to the Trojans when USC hired Oklahoma's Lincoln Riley as head coach at the end of the 2021 campaign.
Officially the last Trojan to win this award was Matt Leinart in 2004.
Reggie Bush won it in 2005, however his win is officially vacated because of improper benefits, which would likely be allowed under the NCAA's current name, image and likeness rules.
With this victory, USC is now tied with Notre Dame, Ohio State and Oklahoma for the most Heisman Trophy winners with seven.
The 20-year-old native of Washington D.C. is the 19th QB to win the award in the new millennium, with Derrick Henry, Bush, DeVonta Smith and Mark Ingram the only non-quarterbacks who’ve captured the award this century.
Williams is the eighth sophomore to win the trophy, joining Tim Tebow and Bryce Young, among others.
The final voting tally saw William garner 88.57% of the ballots, followed by Duggan at 78.51%, Stroud at 39.54% and Bennett garnering 24.23% of the votes.
