There may be no games being played, but that doesn’t mean all the drama is lost. Plenty has happened since Houston’s World Series Championship all of eleven days ago - here’s some context for what’s listed below:
Qualifying Offer - This offseason’s qualifying offer is set at $19.65 Million. It’s calculated based off of the top 125 salaries in the MLB, attaching draft-pick compensation to it in the event a player signs elsewhere after declining a team’s qualifying offer.
Player Options - The Player can decide whether to opt-in to the remaining term of his contract, or opt-out. It depends on the length (years remaining) as well as if they think they can get a better deal on the open market or not.
Club Options - The team can decide whether to retain a player for the remaining term of his contract or not. Many club options come with a pre-determined buyout, with the club paying a small portion of the remaining contract in order to allow them to enter Free Agency.
Mutual Options - These options are decided by both the player and club, with both sides having to agree in order to remain in his current contract. Both the player and club have the ability to decline their sides of the option, either of which resulting in the player becoming a Free Agent.

  • Atlanta Braves acquire RHP Dennis Santana from the Texas Rangers in exchange for Cash.

  • Colorado Rockies acquire 1B/3B Nolan Jones from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for INF Juan Brito.

SIGNINGS:
  • Edwin Diaz, RP, New York Mets - Five-years, $102 Million:
  • New York retains the best closer in baseball for five more years, as Steve Cohen wasted no time forking out some cash.
  • Robert Suarez, RP, San Diego Padres - Five-years, $46 Million:
  • The 31-year old rookie cashed in big after an excellent year with the Padres, and will remain a part of a strong San Diego ‘pen.
  • Clayton Kershaw, SP, Los Angeles Dodgers - One-year, $20 Million:
  • Every year people say he’ll go to Texas and he never does, as Kershaw is back for (at least) one more season as he helps fill out the Dodgers’ staff.
  • Jose Urena, SP, Colorado Rockies - One-year, $3 Million:
  • It’s Colorado, and nobody ever pitches well in Colorado. Best of luck to Urena (and the Rockies) as the never-ending “rebuild” continues.
  • Rafael Montero, RP, Houston Astros - Three-years, $34.5 Million:
  • One of a number of relievers capitalizing on great seasons, Houston inks one of their playoff heroes for at least three more years.
  • Nick Anderson, RP, Atlanta Braves - One-year, $875K:
  • Coming off elbow surgery, Anderson gets a prove-it split deal with Atlanta. If he is remotely similar to pre-injury Anderson, the Braves get yet another steal.
  • Tyler Anderson, SP, Los Angeles Angels - Three-years, $39 Million:
  • Coming off his best season ever, he inks a multi-year deal to help steady the Angels rotation - a good idea in theory, but they’re the Angels, so something is bound to go wrong.
  • Anthony Rizzo, 1B, New York Yankees - Two-years, $34 Million:
  • A mediocre-at-times year for Rizzo showed everyone that, in theory, his production will go back up once the shift is removed. Then again, he’s a lefty and it is Yankee Stadium - he’ll hit some homers regardless.
  • Nick Martinez, RP, San Diego Padres - Three-years, $26 Million:
  • Likewise with Suarez, Martinez returns to the Padres after declining his player option - and receives $8 Million more than he would have had he accepted.
